astronomy guide
Can I pls get a step by step guide in solving this problem for my astronomy class…?

I dont just want the answer I have the answer I just need to know how to get that answer:

With the absolute magnitude of a star with an apparent magnitude equal to 8.0 which is 145 pc from Earth.

M= m – 5 log (d/10)
M = 8 – 5 log (145/10)
M = 8 – 5 (1.16)
M = -0.05………………How did they get that??

M = m – 5 log (d/10) . . . . . . formula is OK, I checked online to make sure

M = 8 – 5 log (145/10). . . . . numbers entered match those in question

M = 8 – 5 (1.16) . . . . . . . . . log (14.5) = 1.16, so this line is OK

M = -0.05 .. . . . . . . . . . . . . this should actually be 2.2 (8 – 5×1.16 = 2.2)

As Cameron pointed out, 8 – 5×1.61 = -0.05

Someone must have used wrong numbers to calculate last line (1.61 instead of 1.16) and got erroneous results.
