Observing Sites
Currently I live in Sahuarita, Arizona.
The best site I've found to observe so far is the visitors' picnic area at the base of Mount Hopkins near Amado. Up the mountain is the MMT and Whipple Observatory. Right next to where I set up is the VERITAS observatory. This location has concrete benches for setting up and nice level clearings for my scope. About 2km up the mountain there's also an amateur astronomy vista which I have visited once. As far as sky quality, being 2km away it's the same, but it's much smaller and after 4 hours, I had cacti spines all over my clothes. The visitors' center is much more open and has plenty of room for all of my equipment.
Before moving to Arizona, I lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For observing and imaging there, I usually drove about 40 minutes to South Whitley to a local park. Although nowhere near the kind of skies that I have access to now, it was a step up from the pollution of the city.
If anyone lives in Tucson, Green Valley, Sahuarita or nearby and is looking for someone to observe with I would be happy to have some company besides my dog or the occasional coyote. I am very much an amateur and I'm still learning as I go, so if anyone more experienced would like to impart knowledge I would welcome it, or if anyone is looking for input about getting started in astronomy, being new myself, I may be able to give you some relevant advice.
